The Lower End of the Hyades Initial Mass Function

By Claia Olena Bryja

Under the supervision of Dr. Roberta M. Humphreys

This thesis is devoted to extending our knowledge of the stellar mass function of the Hyades cluster down to the lowest observable luminosities seen on the Palomar Sky Survey plates. We review the importance of the mass function to issues of astrophysics and cosmology, and show why studies of young open clusters are especially informative. We then explain our reasons for specifically selecting the Hyades for study, and briefly outline the methods and strategies to be used in this thesis.
