I13 Jets - Production
Introduction
This model, referred to as I13, is of intermittent jets that cycle on and off every 13 Myr. We run this jet model varying parameters such as:
- Internal Mach number
- Orientation of the jets to the large scale flow
- Plasma β.
These production runs were all done on the Itasca supercomputer at the MSI using 5,860 cores with the WOMBAT MHD code. The simulations presented here are 10083 zones with 1 zone equaling 1 kpc3. These simulations represent 192 Myr of evolution.
Orthogonal - Mach 3
In this simulation the jets are orthogonal to the large scale flow and have an internal Mach number of 3. The jets are launched in approximate pressure equilibrium with their immediate surroundings. There is no bending effect on the jets due to the flow, but they are very asymmetric nevertheless.
Color Volume Rendering
In this clip red represents regions with only small amounts of AGN plasma mixed in. Green are regions with equal parts AGN and ICM plasma, and yellow are regions dominated by AGN plasma. The AGN lobes are highly mixed.
Color - Slice
This clip is a slice through the AGN plasma tracer (color), and again shows the mixing and incomplete filling of the AGN cavity with AGN plasma.
Density - Slice
This slice through density highlights low density regions in the brightest colors.
Magnitude of Magnetic Field - Slice
This slice through magnetic field shows structures on many scales that get stretched out by the passing bow shock. The AGN jets also stretch out fields originally draped in front of them.
Magnitude of Velocity - Slice
This slice through velocity magnitude shows that there are motions throughout the ICM. The jets are the fastest flow.
Orthogonal - Mach 2 (almost production)
In this simulation the jets are orthogonal with the large scale flow and have an internal Mach number of 2. With the lower internal Mach number the jets are "puffier" then the higher internal Mach number above. The jets are somewhat more swept back then the higher Mach number as well. This is likely due to the greater effect of ICM ram pressure. The jets are launched in approximate pressure equilibrium with their immediate surroundings. This run is a 6163 kpc (zone) grid and was run out to 114 Myr.
